Meta officially discontinued the native Facebook Messenger desktop application for Windows and macOS on December 15, 2025. If you attempt to launch the legacy desktop client, you will be redirected to use a browser-based solution.
However, you can still easily achieve a identical standalone “desktop app” experience by creating a Progressive Web App (PWA) using Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Apple Safari. 💻 How to “Download” Messenger as a Desktop App
Since there is no longer a traditional installer file, follow these steps to add Messenger to your desktop, taskbar, or dock using your web browser: Using Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (Windows & Mac)
Open your browser and navigate to the Official Messenger Site. Log in with your Facebook credentials if prompted.
Click the three dots menu icon (top-right corner of the browser). Hover over Cast, save, and share (Chrome) or Apps (Edge).
Click Install page as app… (or Install This Site as an App). Name it “Messenger” and click Install.
This will generate a standalone window and place a dedicated Messenger shortcut icon on your Windows Desktop or macOS Launchpad. Using Apple Safari (Mac Only) Launch Safari and go to the Official Messenger Site. Log into your account.
Click the Share button (the square icon with an upward arrow in the top toolbar). Select Add to Dock from the list of options. Confirm by clicking Add. 💬 How to Use Messenger on Desktop
Once your web app is created and pinned to your taskbar or dock, using it feels identical to the older desktop application:
Log In: The app will securely leverage your browser’s active session, meaning you will remain permanently logged in unless you manually clear your cache or sign out.
The Interface: The layout utilizes a clean three-column setup. Your active chat threads sit on the left, your main conversation displays in the center, and contact info or media settings sit on the right.
Enable Notifications: To ensure you don’t miss text or incoming video calls, click the lock icon in the web app’s address bar area and verify that Notifications are set to “Allow”.
Multitasking Features: You can resize the standalone window to sit on the side of your screen, letting you seamlessly chat while browsing other programs.
